Honking For The Wrong Reasons

I woke up early and couldn’t get back to sleep. I was listening to an old Larry Norman song called “One Way” (youtube link) and this memory popped into this ole head of mine.

My mom and I were in the car coming home from somewhere. I was maybe around 11 years old or so. We were driving down Rt8 coming down the long grade just past the blinking light at Brownsdale Rd. in Middlesex Township (Pennsylvania) when a big truck passed us. He started beeping and kept his truck alongside the car keeping pace with us.

There was a “Honk If You Love Jesus” bumper sticker on the car so we assumed he was honking because he loved Jesus. We both put our arms out the window and gave him the One Way Jesus sign (index finger pointed to the sky). He didn’t give us the sign back, which was strange, and he kept beeping that big old loud horn.

We turned off Rt8 onto 228. Right then is when I realized what was going on. My mom had a tank top on and the neckline fell down. Her entire bra covered boob was exposed to the world! Well, maybe not the world but it was exposed to that beeping trucker! He was not honking because he loved Jesus. He was honking because he loved my mom’s exposed boob!

My mom was still going on about the truck driver as I pointed to her chest. The look on her face was a look of shock and horror mixed together as she said “Good grief!” (that was one of her go-to sayings). I started laughing. She started laughing. She even had to pull over to the side of the road because she was laughing so hard. We continued laughing, trying to catch our breath, as she readjusted herself to contain that big old boob of hers.

It was a good day and a great memory.

Note-My mom used to wear those heavy cotton bras. She ironed them to a point. The cotton strap used to leave big dents in her shoulders. I used to tease her that she could impale people on those pointy things.

My mom passed on Feb. 18, 2020. I miss her so much but I am so glad that I have so many wonderful memories of my great and loving family to hold on to. This memory is one of the many.

Carole Keys, my mom, just being silly and laughing.
