When a natural disaster occurs, many pets end up falling behind and can be injured, lost or killed in the confusion on what to make a family emergency plan and add to household pets.

Make an emergency kit for your pets.
*Medicines and medical records with proof of vaccinations (especially rabies).
*Belts, pet carrier and other equipment to transport.
*A muzzle if required or necessary for your pet.
*Water (1/2 gallon per day) and food for three days, do not forget a manual can opener if you bring cans.
*A litter box or similar product for your cat.
*Photography and updated description of your pet in case this gets lost or separated.
*Name and phone number of your veterinarian.
*If you have some kind of insurance for your pet, have the contact number of the policy and on hand

If you have to evacuate your home, take your pets.
*Prepare ahead to exit early.
*Keep them tied with a leash or in a special carrier beside her.
*Make sure your pet is wearing collar and identification tag at all times. Include a phone number where contact you.
*Birds must be transported in a secure cage for travel or in a special carrier. In summer times carrying a water spray and wet your birds feathers often.

After a disaster.
*Upon returning home do not let your animals run loose in the yard or around. While you investigate what the damage to your property keep animals, such as dogs or cats in their carrier or on a leash near you.
*Many points and smells may be gone, making the animals become disoriented. This can make your pet more easily lost.
*Be patient. Try to return to a normal routine as soon as possible and is pending signals that may show signs of behavioral problems, if these problems persist, contact your veterinarian.

TIPS DE SEGURIDAD PARA TU MASCOTA EN TEMPORADA DE HURACAN
by Doggie House on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 1:45am ·

A friend of my mom contacted her because his baby Shadow was attracting too many boys and he wanted to make it easier on her and get her neutered. My mom knew Shadow when she was just a baby and loves to help when she can.

He decided to take Shadow to the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña also known as UNPHU. They have a Veterinary Clinic there that is very good. My mom took my sister, whom I never met, Sniffy there when she was hit by a Jeepeta in Bani and they took care of her very good.

This is the report that Shadows dad Craig sent to my mom..
“Well Shadow had her surgery on Tuesday at UNPHU Vet. Clinic. – these are very professional people who did a great job, there is almost always one of the Doctors that speaks English (actually most of them except the desk ladies), the cost was RD $4300 – about a quarter of what the private vet wanted. She was there for three days (Dropped off Monday am and picked up Thursday am). They did pre-op Monday, gave antibiotics, etc…. Made sure she was good to go for surgery on Tuesday am, and then a day of recovery.”

I am sure that poor Shadow hurt for a few days but when she fully recovers she will be so much happier. She will not have those nasty boys after her every few months bugging her and trying to hurt her. When she gets all better Shadows dad said he will take me and mom to the beach to celebrate. I cannot wait!

My 2 sisters dogs (Sniffy and Stuff) that I never met were neutered. There are so many dogs in the world without homes. It is very responsible to do this for your best friend that you love. If you want a dog please adopt. There are many great animals that need your love and care. And be responsible Spay and Neuter them.

The first day I came to live in my new house my mommy took me for a walk. When I got home there were ticks all over my body. They were in my ears and between my toes. My hair is not very long so they really couldn’t hide there (In Spanish they call these nasty blood sucking creatures Garrapatas). She didn’t even think to check for them so when Aunt Kay came to bring me some special food that she sells in her pet store called Pet Plaza (I will write more about the store later), she checked me out. She said that she had this special tool to remove the ticks that she used for all her animals and she would bring it for me. She said there are lots of ticks in Dominican Republic.

The ticks here that have visited my body are much smaller than the ones my mom saw in USA (look at the big bugger at the bottom of this post). She tried to get pictures but she needs one of those really good cameras so these will just have to do. At least you will get the idea.

Normal size tick – garrapata. You can see the top of the alcohol bottle to gage the size.

Tcik – Garrapata close up and lightened-up to be seen better.

That night my mom said she had tick dreams. She told me that once she got Lyme Disease from a tick in USA and she has had a fear of these blood sucking pests ever since. She told me she heard form some people that there is Lyme Disease in Dominican Republic and others say it is not here. So really who knows? If anyone has any real information about this you can email me.

Deer tick from USA

(My mommy’s friend Phil gave us this ugly picture County Photographer.com)

Aunt Kay came the next day and showed mom how to use the tool its called O’Tom Tick Twister or in Spanish Gancho Para Garrapatas. (Mommy has some of the tools in our house for sale for $189RDPesos if you live in the area of Colonial Zone you can send me an email teli@colonialzone-dr.com and we can arrange for you to get yours). She got the tick in the tool and —all gone!– She put those nasty ticks in some alcohol and we watched them die! Bad bad ticks!

Tick removers

After the ticks were removed and the booboos cleaned up I got some Frontline Plus applied to the back of my neck. It didn’t even hurt! It has helped so much as I have not had 1 tick on me since.

Please, please you mommies and daddies of pets all over the world. Do not let those blood sucking creatures on your loved ones. They make us itch and feel all over just plain nasty. Imagine how you would feel if things were sucking your blood and you could do nothing about it.
