La diversidad nos enriquece: Pro-diversidad 3-24-2013

Dominican Republic is a country with a diverse racial background and yet there is much racism. Because of this the group “Movimiento PRO – Diversidad”/ “Pro-diversity movement” seeks to create a space to share values, ideas, feelings and artistic expression of diversity as an expression of the richness of life in society. They seek to advance the rapprochement (definition Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary– rapprochement – French word meaning “to bring together” – the development of friendlier relations between countries or groups of people who have been enemies), between people who feel different forms of discrimination on their situations and preferences (racism, homophobia, intolerance of artistic styles, dress, etc..)

There will be 3 days full of music, art, culture, history and happiness. Scroll down for the map and full list of events.

Some of the good stuff happening during this three day event include
*Longest Street Theater – Grand Street Theater from Parque Duarte to Plaza España Friday 12 from 7pm to 9pm
*5 Music Festivals in so called “Rincones” (a corner or corner store) with different music genres Urban music, Jazz & Blues, Latin, Salsa & Son) *A Handcraft Market
*Midevil Market at Fortaleza Ozama Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 from 10am – 8pm
*Gastronomic Tour with restaurants offering Dominican cuisine-themed menus
*Big concert at the Plaza España
*All the museums will be open until midnight Friday 12 from 9am – 12am
*Fiesta Real at the Museo de Casas Reales Saturday 13 at 8pm
*The Cathedral Choir and Symphony will be at Plaza de Colón Sunday 14 at 11:30am
*One of the events I look forward to is the ringing of the church bells of the Colonial City. They will all be ringing at the same time throughout the entire city. The sound is spectacular.

The Music
All concerts and music venues will have a VIP area, bars, music and more. The music will be each day of the Festival from 4PM to 10PM.

Rincón del Jazz – The Jazz & Blues Music Festival will be at Parque Fray Bartolome de las Casas on Calle Hostos and Luperon.

Rincon de Café de Toi – Cafe de Toi will be on Calle Hostos with Conde and bringing surpise music.

Rincon Latino – Sponsored by the club Jet Set will be on Calle Hostos and Resturacion at the Ruinas of San Francisco with groups & artists of Latin music genres Dominican merengue, salsa and bachata.

Gran caminata historica (el teatro de Calle mas largo), 5 festivales de musica en “Ricones” , espacios determinados en la Ciuad Colonial, de diferentes generos (musica urbana, Jazz, musica latina, Son), feria artesanal, tour gastronomico, Fiesta Real en el museo, gran concierto en la Plaza Espana, toque coordinado de campanas de las iglesias de la Ciudad Colonial, Mercado Medieval, entre otros…

This, the fifteenth year of the event, the Santo Domingo International Book Fair is dedicated to Central America. The special yearly honor goes to the late poet, novelist and essayist local Enriquillo Sánchez. Sanchez, who was part of the founding team of the event, died in 2004 at age 57. Some of his more famous books are “Pájaro dentro de la lluvia” and “Convicto y confeso”. He was also the winner of the National Poetry Prize Salomé Ureña/ Nacional de Poesía Salomé Ureña and Ruben Dario Latin American Poetry Contest/ Premio Latinoamericano de Poesía Rubén Darío. The Director General of the event, Alejandro Arvelo says Sanchez was an extraordinary intellectual, writer and winner benchmark figure contemporary literature of the country.

The event will also commemorate the centenary of the birth of local writer Hector Incháustegui Cabral/ escritor local Héctor Incháustegui Cabral (1912-1979) and his compatriot María Montez (1912-1951)who was born in Barahona. She conquered Hollywood in the forties and earned the title “Queen of Technicolor”/ “La reina del tecnicolor”.

The Fair also will honor Spanish poet and painter Eugenio Fernández Granell (1912-2001) who was exiled to Dominican Republic after the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).

Arvelo announced that writers, editors and artists from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama will participate actively in the book fair this year.

This year there will be a Gastronomic Forum, and a space devoted to wine and spirits.

The big attraction this year is when Spanish chef Dani García will display his nitrogen cooking techniques. Also Eva Riera Torrecillo will have a culinary demonstration for THERMOMIX and Caribbean Cuisine, this brand’s representative in the Dominican Republic. Chef Riera is the Associate Sales Director for THERMOMIX Algeciras and Ceuta.

The third Fashion Week event in Dominican Republic is coming. This event showcases all the great talented Dominican designers and many invited guests from the world over.

The organizer of this years event is Tita Hasbún.

There will be fashion shows by Nicole Miller from USA, Carlos Campos from Honduras, Custo Dalmau from Spain, Benito Fernández from Argentina, Stella Nolasco y Eddie Guerrero from Puerto Rico and Silvia Shazadi from Venezuela.

The featured Dominican designers include Sissy Bermudez, Arcadio Díaz, Jenny Polanco, Esteban Martínez, Giannina Azar and others.
